PhD student in Quantum Superconducting Science
Why Quantum Superconducting Science?
I am doing a PhD in physics because I think that there is so much more for me to learn. An undergraduate degree barely scratched the surface of the large body of knowledge out there and a PhD gives me the opportunity to finally study something in-depth and understand it properly. One of the main benefits of a PhD is that you are paid to study what you enjoy, what you find most interesting. You get to tackle big questions that you have always wanted to know the answer to.
My Project
At the moment I am doing research into fundamental interactions between light and matter. Recent experiments have found ways of building light-matter systems that interact much more strongly than many people thought possible. I am studying such systems to see if we can find new phenomena and propose experiments that can observe such phenomena. I am also very interested in finding new interdisciplinary connections between such fields as quantum optics, surface science and finance. Although these fields are very different, the underlying processes can all be described by the same equation and therefore insights can be gained by studying how each field approaches the same equation from different points of view.
Why Macquarie?
Having spent my undergraduate years at Sydney, I decided to do my PhD at Macquarie because of the expertise in my chosen field. Macquarie has one of the largest quantum physics groups in the country and, as such, has a wealth of knowledge. I have found that in the (very unlikely) event my supervisor can't answer one of my questions, I can walk down the hall and find someone who can.
The Future?
I hope to get a post-doc position somewhere in Europe and spend several years overseas before returning to Australia.
