Biophysical Chemistry Workshop

Adelaide, South Australia

7 - 9 April 2010

Due to its interdisciplinary nature, Biophysical Chemistry doesn't fall neatly within the bounds of any of the current divisions of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI). Australian biophysical chemists wishing to present their research at an Australian conference must make the decision between attending meetings of the RACI Physical, Electrochemistry, Polymer, Colloid and Surface Science or Biomolecular Divisions or attending meetings of the Australian Society for Biophysics. We believe that this leads to a fragmentation of the Australian biophysical chemistry community.

In order to encourage biophysical chemical research in Australia, provide a forum for physical chemists interested in biophysical research questions to interact and to raise the profile of biophysical chemistry in this country in general, we propose to organize a biophysical chemistry workshop.

The topics which this would cover include:

- Spectroscopy of biological molecules;
- Kinetics and thermodynamics of biological systems;
- Biophysical chemistry of membranes and membrane proteins;
- Protein crystallography and mass spectrometry;
- Molecular modelling of biological systems;
- Photosynthesis;
- Physical chemistry of natural products and polymers;
- Bioelectrochemistry.

The workshop is planned for the 7th-9th of April 2010 in Adelaide. Invited international speakers would include:

1. Prof. Joachim Heberle (University of Bielefeld)
2. Prof. Pierre Sebban (University of Paris XI)
3. Prof. Wolfram Saenger (Free University Berlin)

Currently we are considering a few possible venues within the Adelaide region. In order to choose the most appropriate venue, we first need to have a rough estimate of the likely number of attendees.

To express your interest, please respond via e-mail and let us know if you would be interested in attending and how many of your group would also be likely to attend? Please forward this invitation to any of your colleagues who you think could also be interested.
