Educators recognised for outstanding contribution

Macquarie University teachers will receive six Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning in 2011, the Australian Learning and Teaching Council has announced.

The citations, worth $10,000 each, will be presented at the 2011 Australian Awards for University Teaching ceremony at the Sydney Opera House on 16 August.

Citations can be awarded to individuals or teams of academic, general and sessional staff, and institutional associates, who have made significant contributions to student learning in a specific area of responsibility over a sustained period.

Macquarie's Dr Jana Lay-Hwa Bowden was one of 22 "Early Career" achievers to win an award. The winners in this category, offered for the first time in 2011, are being recognised for a sustained commitment to the student experience, despite having begun their careers in higher education no more than seven years ago.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Provost) at Macquarie, Professor Judyth Sachs applauded all of the staff recognised by the awards.

"It's very encouraging to see not just a large number of our excellent educators winning awards, but also to note the wide variety of initiatives being recognised right across the university," she said.

The winners from Macquarie University in 2011 are:

  • BIOL114: Evolution and Biodiversity (Dr Marie Herberstein, Rekha Joshi, James O'Hanlon and Matthew Bulbert) - For developing a student-led approach to scientific learning in first year, while inculcating the rigor and spirit of scientific investigation
  • Rod Lane - For promoting independent learning and a passion for teaching through an innovative and evidence-based approach to pedagogy and assessment
  • Dr Jana Lay-Hwa Bowden (Early Career) - For developing a highly interactive, collaborative teaching culture that actively fosters the co-creation of knowledge, stimulates student curiosity and encourages engagement with the marketing environment
  • Professor Quentin Parker - For involving students in research-led astronomical learning and teaching which engages students with real science and builds a sustainable community of practice
  • Dr Karin Speedy - For creativity and innovation in the design of curricula and resources with an international and interdisciplinary outlook that engages students in discovery focused learning
  • Associate Professor Dominic Verity - For a decade of inspirational and innovative educational leadership in the field of information technology
